What “magnetic messaging” really means (and how to write brand messaging that feels like you)

What is magnetic messaging?

What's the deal with magnetic messaging?

I don’t know about you, but when I come back from holidays it takes me a few days to find my groove again.
So I don’t schedule deep thinking or big writing jobs — just coffee, emails, and low-pressure admin.

But then I fall into the trap.
I start consuming instead of creating.
And suddenly, my feed’s full of “million-dollar messaging frameworks” and “secret formulas to magnetic content.”

Even after 25 years in marketing and comms, that stuff can still make me question my existence.  Do I really know stuff?  um… yes I do.

But buzzwords always get me.

Magnetic messaging? Please.
Are words supposed to have an invisible force field that sucks people in and they can’t get out?

So like any, self-doubting marketer I researched the hell of it to get to the heart of what it’s about.

Magnetic messaging isn’t magic — it’s good communication principles in action.
Plain English. Emotive. Relatable. And powered by that totally you magic that makes it unique.

Phew. I do that.

Clarity is your true magnet

If someone has to reread your sentence, you’ve already lost them.
Be clear, not clever.
Ask yourself: could a half-distracted human scrolling their phone instantly understand what you do and why it matters?

Emotion beats logic (every time)

Humans buy on emotion and justify with logic later.
So make them feel something — seen, inspired, relieved, confident.
Your message should say, “I get you,” not “I outsmarted you.”

Own it

Forget being beige. That’s boring.

Magnetic brands have opinions. And they’re not afraid to share them.

They believe something about their industry — and say it with conviction.
That’s what earns trust and attention.

Specificity builds trust

Vague is invisible.
Specificity makes people believe you.
Compare: “We help small businesses grow” vs. “We help solo founders sound like themselves on LinkedIn.”
One is wallpaper, the other’s a magnet.

Repetition creates recognition

Magnetism builds through consistency.
Say things in your tone, your way, across every channel — website, LinkedIn, emails.
That’s how people start saying, “I saw this and thought of you.”
Repeat your message.

Bring the YOU into it

I always bang on about YOU in your copy for good reason.
It’s the one thing in a sea of AI copy that can’t be faked.

Your quirks and turns of phrase are your fingerprint.
They’re what make your brand voice unmistakably yours — and impossible to copy.

Try this exercise:

  • Write down three phrases you always say

  • Note what people quote back to you

  • Identify what you’d never say (even if it is what others say)

  • Highlight one line or truth only you could write

That’s your voice. That’s your magnet.

So, that’s all Magnetic Messaging is.

It’s clarity, emotion, stance, specificity, and consistency — all wrapped in your personality.

Phew. Turns out empathy, emotion and plain English still work.

That’s what I help you find in your Brand Story — the version of your message that attracts people because it sounds like you.

Because magnetic isn’t magic.
It’s meaning that sounds like you.
